Wash Your Hands

2024 Sasol New Signatures — Finalist
Paper

As an artist with dyslexia who struggles to read and writes phonetically, I rely on the forms of words and objects to make sense of the world around me. I use paper as a medium for weaving intricate patterns. Within this series of tea towels, the process of weaving the patterns is a reflection of my pursuit of perfection and the beauty found in the act of problem-solving for myself.

The tea towels avoid representation in favour of an exploration of the artistic process of making. Each woven pattern is not a depiction of a specific image or concept but rather a reflection of my ongoing use of geometric lines, mathematics, and the intricacies of form, with the aim of creating sense and order. I challenge myself to use the complexities of dyslexia as a means of creative expression.

These tea towels serve as a tangible artefact to tell me to let go or to wash one’s hands in the pursuit of perfection as is not real or tangible. As hard as I tried to be precise and perfect the towels are not similar and all have imperfections in them. Therefore I wash my hands and say I would rather look for the imperfect in the pursuit of perfection.
