New Brighton, the first recognised black township in South Africa during the apartheid era, as well as its struggles and resiliency. Established in 1902, the name “New Brighton” and many street names in the area were intentionally se-lected to evoke the popular seaside resort town of Brighton in the UK. By examining its establishment, growth, resistance against racial oppression, and present-day develop-ments in education, industry, and notable individuals, the series seeks to highlight the township’s cultural significance and its residents’ aspirations for a better future. By docu-menting its rich history and celebrating its achievements, this series aims to shed light on the strength and determination of the New Brighton community, emphasising its role as a cultural centre that embraces its past, present, and future opportunities.
This is NEW Brighton was exhibited in May and July 2023 at the Jubilee Library Brighton, UK and PACE, which forms part of the Vrystaat Arts Festival.
