An exhibition series exploring the existence and impact of colonial references ‘hidden in plain sight’ in the built environment across neighbourhoods. This edition focusses on Brighton/South Africa connections.
The Bear Road neighbourhood is located along one of the four main transport corridors into central Brighton. One the ‘character’ areas in the vicinity is known as Boer and according to local authority urban study reports, this residential setting has a ‘distinct sense of place’ and ‘merits positive enhancement of the public realm’. The names of some of the streets in Boer reflect the historical connections and influences from the British Empire – notably British war victories and atrocities in South Africa. Specific reference is made to British Boer War soldiers, statesmen, police officers and colonial administrators, Baden, Buller, Milner, Nesbitt and Redvers, plus the key locations of the war, Kimberley, Ladysmith, Mafeking and Natal.
